Meanwhile, during your extended stay in Alta, you can take the opportunity to leave the city behind and head out under the night skies, where light pollution is low, so that you may witness the beautiful dancing ribbons of colour and light that have captivated people for millennia.
Celebrate spending time outdoors
Norwegians believe that time is best spent outdoors participating in activities that connect with nature, no matter your age or the time of year. This wonderful idea is known as frilutfsliv, and on this Balmoral cruise, you'll have opportunities to immerse yourself fully in this concept. You may wish to simply explore on foot or enjoy energetic hikes through landscapes of waterfalls, little villages, farms, and dense forests; spend time with the Sámi people in a lavvu tent, discovering more about their traditions and way of life, including reindeer herding, and hear a performance of joik folk music.

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.
