Witness the Northern Lights

As Borealis crosses the Arctic Circle to a selection of destinations in Northern Norway, you are ideally placed to join us for uninterrupted views of Mother Nature's awe-inspiring spectacle of the Northern Lights. In Narvik, you will be surrounded by majestic fjords, perfect for your first glimpse of the auroral display; while in Bodø, head into the Arctic wilderness with a local expert guide who will seek out the perfect location away from any light pollution, and hear local myths and tales as you wait for the swirling ribbons of green to dance across the skies above.

Experience the Arctic Way of Life

You are perfectly placed on this cruise to immerse yourself in Arctic experiences and discover how daily life is shaped. The indigenous Sámi people's culture is deeply ingrained in the natural world, so you will have the chance to spend time with them, witness reindeer herding and help feed the animals or step inside a lavvu tent to hear stories of their traditions and nomadic life in the harsh landscapes of Northern Norway. There may also be the opportunity to participate in an ancient Sámi Shaman ceremony in the lavvu and enjoy a traditional drumming ceremony.

Unravelling the Science of the Aurora Borealis

The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun are blown towards the earth by solar winds, and as these particles collide with the earth's atmosphere, it creates the ribbons of coloured light known as the Northern Lights. The distinctive colours are determined by the type of gas emitted and the height of the collision, so you'll be able to see that oxygen produces green and red lights, while nitrogen creates shades of blue and purple. The destinations on this cruise are perfect for witnessing the Aurora Borealis, due to clear skies, minimal light pollution and atmospheric conditions, offering fabulous displays against the backdrop of the Arctic sky.
