From here, the wide plains of Africa beckon, and opportunities to see the Big Five on special overland safari itineraries should not be missed. The Namib Desert, the world's oldest desert, offers sights of wild seascapes and sky-high sand dunes, while at nearby Walvis Bay, you can witness huge numbers of flamingos that flock to the lagoon, painting the horizon a delicate pink shade. Subtropical St. Helena is one of the world's most remote islands, with a unique blend of nature and history that provides a multitude of attractions, including rugged coastline and colonial buildings. You will also have the chance to discover how the island served as a place of exile for famous prisoners, including Napoleon, who died on St. Helena.

Located between the sand dunes of the Namib wilderness and the South Atlantic Coast, Lüderitz is surrounded by turquoise waters brimming with seals, penguins, and dolphins, while Walvis Bay is home to Swakopmund Lagoon, where visiting flamingoes transform the horizon into a sea of pink.
Uncover one of the world's remotest islands
The island of St. Helena, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, is one of the world's most remote, with its own subtropical microclimate creating diversified landscapes of volcanic rock, mountains, and lush flora and unusual fauna. The capital of Jamestown has a rich history, having served as a vital strategic stopover point prior to the invention of steamships, and the town is a testimony to that history, with thoughtfully designed Georgian buildings dotting its streets. The island offers various walking trails to explore, including Diana's Peak, the highest point on the island, which provides spectacular vistas of mountainous terrain and the deep blue of the surrounding ocean. The culture of St. Helena is characterised by warmth, a strong feeling of community, and pride in its traditions, including savouring great local dishes, or simply spending time with a 'Saint', as the island's residents like to be known as.

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.
