Paul’s career at sea spans an impressive 24 years and counting. We caught up with him to uncover some of his most memorable moments on the ocean and to gain an insight into his role as Bolette’s Hotel Manager.
“My older brother was a chef, and he used to get me jobs in restaurants and hotels in central London while I was at college – mostly washing up and mopping floors. As soon as I was old enough, I moved to front-of-house roles, like banqueting and weddings. After college, I continued working in hotels through university, then returned to London and joined Cliveden Hotelsat their Sloane Square property as a concierge, which I loved. After hearing great things about cruise life from colleagues, I applied to several companies in 2000 and landed a job as a junior purser with Renaissance Lines. My first contract was in French Polynesia, and from there, each contract brought better itineraries, and I loved the travel and lifestyle.
In 2021, I joined Fred. Olsen as part of the startup team in Rosyth. The Fred. Olsen experience is unique to the cruise industry, with the friendliest guests and an incredibly diverse crew that always delivers. I thoroughly enjoy being part of a large operation, working alongside professionals at every level – from the Captain to laundry staff to the dishwashers. I have complete respect for all the crew,no matter their role, as everyone contributes to keeping the ship running smoothly.
A typical day on board involves early starts and late nights, especially on turnaround days or during special events like formal nights. My mornings are usually spent checking different areas of the ship and meeting with colleagues to ensure everything is prepared for the day ahead. In the afternoon, I like to take a walk around the ship to chat with guests to gather feedback on their cruise experience. I also speak with bar staff, stewardesses and waiters to get insights from their areas – this is key to helping me gauge how the cruise is going and what we can improve for both guests and crew. In the evening, I take part in menu tastings in the main galley and check in on the bar and dining areas. It’s a varied and busy role, but I love being able to help create an exceptional cruise experience for our guests.
Working on cruise ships for 24 years has given me a unique perspective on life, the chance to work with amazing people from all over the world, and an enriching, rewarding journey in every sense.”
